Changes to marriage registration from 4th May 2021

Home / Changes to marriage registration from 4th May 2021

From 4th May 2021 the marriage registration process is changing. The following legislative changes relate to all marriages at register offices, approved premises and any church or religious building.

For ceremonies taking place after 4th May 2021 marriages will no longer be registered in a marriage register at the end of a ceremony and certificates will not be presented on the day.

Instead, couples and their witnesses must sign a Marriage Schedule or Marriage Document at the ceremony which must be returned to the register office before we can send you a marriage certificate.

  • You will obtain a Marriage Schedule once you have given notice at your local register office.
  • For marriages in a Church of England, you will obtain a Marriage Document once banns have been called.

On the day of your ceremony

For marriages taking place at a register office or approved venue:

The Registrar will bring the Marriage Schedule to your ceremony and return it to the Register Office on your behalf.

For marriages taking place in a religious building:

The Incumbent (Church of England), Authorised Person, Secretary of Synagogue or Society of Friends Registering Officer is responsible for returning the Marriage Schedule or Marriage Document to the Register Office within 21 days of the marriage.

However, with the couples agreement, this task may be delegated to the couple themselves or another member of the wedding party.

Marriage registration

All marriages must be registered at the register office for the district where the marriage takes place. All marriages that occur within the Liverpool city boundary will be registered at Liverpool Register Office.

If the marriage takes place outside the Liverpool city boundary the Marriage Schedule or Marriage Document must be returned to the local register office covering that area.

The Marriage Schedule or Marriage Document cannot be used in place of a marriage certificate.

Issuing your marriage certificate

When we receive your Marriage Schedule or Marriage Document we will complete the registration within 7 days and will post your certificates to you.

You can pay for certificates when delivering the Marriage Schedule or Marriage Document to the Register Office. Certificates cost £11 each and you can pay by credit or debit card, cheque or postal order.
